From the Journal of Patricia Highsmith
A public peek into one person's private diary
Conscience, dear conscience, I dedicate these lines to you.
April 19, 1945
Conscience, dear conscience, I dedicate these lines to you. To you, who spoil everything from breakfast in bed, to sexāeven in the head. From gorging myself on the most churchly music, to standing thirty seconds longer under a hot shower on a cold night. And should I have an evening free, by some quirk, you can conjure up some work. Dear conscience, you of the long and muscle-bound arms, why was I born with you? Why do I love you so?
